KINGS OF MACEDON. Alexander III ‘the Great’, 336-323 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 32 mm, 16.63 g, 1 h), uncertain mint in western Asia Minor, circa 240-180. Head of Herakles to right, wearing lion skin headdress. Rev. AΛEΞANΔPOY Zeus seated left on low throne, holding long scepter in his left hand and eagle standing right with closed wings in his right; to left, dog standing left, head to right. A. Houghton and G. Le Rider: Un trésor de monnaies hellénistiques trouvés près de Sude, in: RN 1966, p. 122 and pl. X, 166 (this coin). Price 2830. Very rare. A nicely toned example of this unusual and crude issue. Light marks, otherwise, very fine.
